Coordinates: 50 ° 55 ′ 55.4 ″  N , 6 ° 59 ′ 34.8 ″  E The Humboldtpark in the Cologne district of Humboldt / Gremberg is a 2.2 hectare listed green space and one of the few inner-city systems in the Kalk district .

location

The park is located in the western part of the Humboldt Colony , which is separated by a freight railway towards the Deutz district . It is bounded by the streets An der Pulvermühle, Gremberger Straße and Burgenlandstraße , from which it can also be entered. It can be reached by local public transport via bus route 153 (Weilburger Straße).

history

A powder mill is said to have existed in the area of today's park or its surroundings from 1858 to 1870 , after which the adjacent street An der Pulvermühle got its name. A planned development of the eastern site as a residential area was carried out from 1874/75 by Humboldt AG , which had houses listed here for its workers. The newly created quarter, the Humboldt Colony , was then removed from the Cologne district in 1888 together with the then city of Deutz and incorporated into Cologne as the first district on the right bank of the Rhine.

After the planning was drawn up in 1912 by the Cologne horticultural director Fritz Encke , the park was laid out in the style of Neoclassicism and Art Nouveau in 1913/14 . A wooden milk house was created based on a design by Hans Verbeek .

100 years after the park was established, the park was refurbished by the Cologne Green Foundation with donations from the Klosterfrau Healthcare Group (€ 300,000) and in cooperation with local initiatives and the Green Spaces Office, and used in a contemporary but traditional manner. The redevelopment of the polluted playground (from the heavy and chemical industry time of the quarter) was carried out with urban funds. Work started in April 2012 and was completed in December 2013.

layout

The triangular park is accessed by circular paths and is now surrounded by tall trees, plane trees and chestnuts. A playground has been created in the open space in the middle. There are also flower gardens. A piece of kitchen and school garden has been replaced by a boules court.
