Humphrey Tuchet

Sir Humphrey Tuchet (aka Audley) of Swaffham , (around 1434 - May 6, 1471 ), was an English knight .

Life

Sir Humphrey was a son of James Tuchet, 5th Baron Audley and his second wife Eleanor de Holland, an illegitimate daughter of Edmund Holland, 4th Earl of Kent and his mistress Constance of York, Countess of Gloucester, a daughter of Edmund of Langley , 1st Duke of York .

Humphrey is called Humphrey Audley or at least alias Audley in all sources . Sir Humphrey was squire of Swaffham, Carlton, Middleton and Little Whelnethan and was Esquire to King Henry VI. and 1461 Constable of Southampton Castle .

During the Wars of the Roses he fought for the House of Lancaster on May 4, 1471 at the Battle of Tewkesbury . After the defeat, he fled with Edmund Beaufort, 3rd Duke of Somerset and around a dozen others to the abbey church and sought refuge there in sanctuary .

On May 6th, however, the unwritten law of sanctuary was broken, all men were taken from the church and tried locally by a court presided over by Richard, Duke of Gloucester and John Mowbray, 4th Duke of Norfolk .

Sir Humphrey was beheaded on May 6, 1471 at Tewkesbury and buried in the abbey church.
