John Mowbray, 4th Duke of Norfolk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Mowbray, 4th Duke of Norfolk KG ( October 18, 1444 - January 14, 1476 ) was an English nobleman from the Mowbray family . His parents were John Mowbray, 3rd Duke of Norfolk (1415–1461), and Eleanor Bourchier, daughter of Wilhelm Bourchier, Earl of Eu, and Anne of Gloucester , Countess of Buckingham. John is a great-great-grandson of Edward III through Anne of Gloucester .

When his father died in 1461, he took over his title and the title of Marshal of England.

John was married to Elisabeth Talbot, daughter of John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury , and his second wife Margarete Beauchamp. Since only one daughter, Anne Mowbray , was alive as heir at John's death in 1476 , the Dukedom Norfolk became extinct in the male line. Anne Mowbray was a rich heiress and was married in 1478 to the second eldest son of Edward IV , Richard of Shrewsbury, 1st Duke of York , at the age of five. In 1481 Richard also received the expired title of Duke of Norfolk. Since relatives of the Mowbray family, the Howard family, had hoped for the inheritance, the extinction of the Dukes of Norfolk harbored the potential for conflict that is still breaking out in the battle for the crown between Richard's brother Edward V and Richard's uncle Richard, Duke of Gloucester should when John Howard opted for Gloucester and later also received the Dukedom Norfolk.
