Hunterston Castle
Hunterston Castle is a castle near Fairlie in the Scottish Council Area of North Ayrshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is the ancestral home of the Hunter clan and is permanently inhabited. Only members of Clan Hunter are permitted to visit, except on Scottish Monument Day.
history
The oldest fragments of what is now Hunterston Castle are believed to date from the mid-13th century. At that time, an older, wooden moth was replaced at this location. The keep probably dates from the early 16th century and was built under John Hunter, 14th Laird . The residential wing was added in the following century. As part of an archaeological investigation in 2001, wall remains were uncovered and examined.

The castle is isolated about four kilometers south of Fairlie between the A78 and the Hunterston nuclear power station . Since the Keep was originally protected by a rampart, it is designed to be relatively small. It consists of four floors, the lowest of which is worked as a vault and was used for storage. The entrance was on the first floor. A spiral staircase leads from there to the various floors. It ends at the battlements, which are reinforced with battlements on three sides. This is cantilevered and rests on corbels . A stair tower emerges from the 17th century extension.
