Huoyan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Huoyan is a Chinese breed of humpback geese . She is from Changtu County in Liaoning Province in northeast China . The breed is lighter than the humpback goose known in Europe and has a much higher laying performance. Huoyan geese have uniformly orange legs and beaks, but there are major variations in the color of the plumage.

In 1981, the Tie Ling Institute for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Research in China procured 500 Huoyan geese and began a selective breeding program that emphasized high egg production . In addition, animals from the population that were not white and had animals with their eyelids closed were eradicated .

After four generations of targeted breeding selection, Huoyan began laying eggs at around 240 days of age. They produce around 90 to 210 eggs per laying period, with 10 percent of the geese achieving the stated maximum output. The egg weight varies between 120 and 210 g. The weight of an adult ganter ranges between 4.0 and 4.5 kg. The weight of adult geese varies between 3.0 and 3.5 kg.

Huoyan are known for their good feed conversion and their insensitivity to cold.
