List of geese breeds

The humpback goose is a breed of goose that goes back to the domestication of the swan goose ( Anser cygnoid ) in Northeast Asia. It was introduced to Europe from China or Japan in the 19th century.

features

Gray-brown humpback goose

Mute geese have a frontal hump on their upper beak similar to that of a mute swan , which is more pronounced in males than in females and, especially in old ganters, can grow to such an extent that it almost looks like a small horn. In the wild form, this hump is only weak and pronounced in the male sex.

The hump goose has a swan-like, curved, long neck and an upright posture. The gray color of the humped goose is colored like its trunk form, the swan goose, and has a straight line of eels . In addition to the gray, there is also a white color. In contrast to white domestic geese, its representatives are real Leucists .

The humped goose is significantly heavier than the wild swan goose, weighing up to 5 kg in the male and 4 kg in the female sex. Their meat is tender and not very fat. With 40 to 60 eggs a year, she has a remarkable laying performance for geese.

The humpback goose has limited flight capabilities and a trumpet-like voice.

More hump geese and hybrids

From the originally bred humpback goose, various variants or breeds developed over time:

  • the African humpback goose , which is also recognized in Germany and Europe and
  • the Russian kholmogory goose. A heavy, gray and white piebald goose with a huge dewlap.

Mute geese can also easily be crossed with domestic geese , which are descended from the gray geese . The Steinbach fighting goose and probably also the Emden goose and the Toulouse goose go back to such a crossing .
