Hus house in Prachatice

The Hus House (Czech Husův dům ) in Prachatice (German Prachatitz ), a town in the Jihočeský kraj (South Bohemia) region in the Czech Republic , is a basically Gothic building that was rebuilt in the Renaissance style from 1540 to 1557 . According to tradition, Jan Hus is said to have lived there while he attended the city school in Prachatice. The building has been a protected cultural monument since May 3, 1958. It is owned by the municipality and is used as the city library.

history

Until 1950 the house was called the Žižka House ( Žižkův dům ) because Jan Žižka allegedly lived there while he attended the Latin school in Prachatice. However, there is no evidence anywhere that Jan Žižka went to school in Prachatice. It is more likely that the Hussite general Jan Žižka, after conquering Prachatice at the end of 1420, lived and worked there in 1422 and also sent his letters from there.

The current name refers to Jan Hus, and the room in which Hus is said to have lived is also shown.

The house has served as a library since 1966, although the original district library was renamed Městská knihovna Prachatice (German Prachatice City Library ) in January 2003 .

description

The Hus house has been preserved in its original form without any major alterations. The sgraffiti were made around 1560.
