The hussar memorial was a war memorial on the market square of Heilsberg .

history

After a fire in the city center, the market square was redesigned. In order to give it a central focus, an equestrian statue created by the sculptor Victor Seifert was placed there. It was a reminder of the Battle of Heilsberg on June 10, 1807, in which the Prittwitz Hussars defeated the 55th French Line Infantry Regiment and captured its eagle standard. Accordingly, the monument shows a Prittwitz Hussar with the captured flag.

The war memorial was inaugurated on August 18, 1913 by General of the Cavalry August von Mackensen , who was an honorary citizen of the city and former commander of the 1st Leib-Hussar Regiment No. 1, as part of the celebrations of the century of the Wars of Liberation in the German Reich. In World War II it was destroyed and then not rebuilt.
