A hoseiniye ( Arabic حسينية Husainīya , DMG Ḥusainīya ; Persian حسینیه Hosseinieh also referred to as Ashurkhana or Imambargah ) is a meeting hall for ritual ceremonies of the Shiites , especially for those in connection with the memory of Muharram : the name of the place is derived from Husain ibn ʿAlī , grandson of the Prophet Mohammed and third Imam of the Shia. Husain was the Umayyad - Caliph Yazid I. in the Battle of Karbala (now in Iraq killed). On this "day of Karbala", Ashura (the tenth day of the Islamic month of Muharram), the Shiites commemorate the death of Hussain.

A Hussainia differs from a mosque in that it was built mainly for gatherings in the Muharram for the funeral ceremonies of Hussain ibn īAlī, and not necessarily for Friday sermons.

A well-known example of this special Shiite form of a mosque is the Hoseiniye -erschād in Tehran in Iran . Other important Hussainias, also known by the name Imambargah, are:

  • Azakhana Wazeer-un-Nisa, in Amroha, India
  • Badshahi Ashurkhana, in Hyderabad, India
  • Bara Imambara, in Lucknow, India
  • Chhota Imambara , in Lucknow, India
  • Imambara Ghufran Ma'ab, in Lucknow, India
  • Imambargah Colonel Maqbool Hussain, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan
  • Imambargah Haveli Saddat, in Gujranwala, Pakistan
  • Imambargah Bait Aal e Imran, in Kotla Arab Ali Khan, Gujrat, Pakistan
