Hussein Badreddin al-Huthi
Hussein Badreddin al-Huthi ( Arabic حسين بدر الدين الحوثي, DMG Ḥusain Badr ad-Dīn al-Ḥūṯī ; * August 20, 1959 in Sa'da governorate ; † September 10, 2004 ibid) was a Yemeni religious, political and military leader of the Zaidis and a former member of the House of Representatives of Yemen for the al-Haqq party between 1993 and 1997. He was a leader in the Houthi conflict that began in 2004. After his death, the Ansar Allah movement he initiated took his name.
Life
His father Badreddin al-Houthi was a prominent Zaidite cleric who briefly took control of the Houthi movement after the later death of his son. According to a student of al-Huthi, he lived part of his life with his family, including his father and younger brother Abdul-Malik al-Huthi, in the city of Qom ( Iran ), which is holy for Shiites . The student also claimed that al-Houthi had close ties with Ali Khamenei , the supreme leader of Iran, and Hassan Nasrallah , the leader of Hezbollah .
al-Houthi was a member of the Yemeni Zaïd / Shafi'i party al-Haqq (The Truth). When the party helped partition the country, it became a government target and he reportedly fled to Syria and then Iran. Upon his return to Yemen, he broke with al-Haqq to found his own party, the Shabab Al Mu'mineen (devout youth) movement. He is also believed to have founded the Ansar Allah armed group, which shortly thereafter was embroiled in anti-American and anti-Israeli protests against the government that marked the beginning of a new civil war. The movement has significant support among the tribes of the mountainous regions of northern Yemen, where the Zaidi branch of the Shia is the dominant religion.
After months of fighting between the Yemeni security forces and Ansar Allah, the Yemeni Ministry of Interior and Defense issued a statement on September 10, announcing that he and 20 of his supporters had been killed in Saada governorate. After his killing, Ansar Allah continued the fight under his name (Houthi revolt). His brothers and father led the rebellion after his death.
