Huta Katowice is an integrated metallurgical plant in Dąbrowa Górnicza , Silesian Voivodeship , Poland , which is engaged in the smelting of raw materials to manufacture steel products. Today it belongs to the ArcelorMittal group .

To supply the plant with Russian iron ore, the Linia Hutnicza Szerokotorowa railway line was built in Russian broad gauge.

history

In September 1971, the Polish government decided to build an integrated metallurgical plant in the Zagłębie Dąbrowskie area . It should be the largest and most modern in the People's Republic of Poland .

In April 1972 the clearing work began near Dąbrowa Górnicza . The rolling mill was able to go into operation as early as September 1976 and on December 3, 1976 the first tapping of the first blast furnace took place . The first steel production took place on December 11th of the same year. In December 1977 the second blast furnace began its furnace journey. Since 1979 the railway line Linia Hutnicza Szerokotorowa has connected the plant with the rail network of the former Soviet Union to supply the plant with iron ore. On September 11, 1980, an agreement was signed between the local strike committee and government officials. When martial law was imposed in 1981 , 41 Solidarność members were arrested, which was followed by an 11-day strike. In 1984 the Przyjaźń coking plant was integrated into the industrial complex. In 1986 the third blast furnace went into operation. After the political change in Poland in 1991, the previous Combine Metalurgiczny Huta Katowice was converted into a stock company Huta Katowice SAJSSP In 2003, Mittal bought the Integrated Steel Works and renamed it Mittal Steel Poland SA in 2005 .

Today the plant consists of three blast furnaces, two rolling mills, a steel mill with continuous casting and a coking plant.
