The company Hutmacher Zapf is a traditional Austrian family company based in throwing (Salzburg-Land). Ludwig Hohenwarter founded the company in 1893; it is currently run by Theresia Bartolot (née Zapf) and employs twelve people.

history

Evidence for the roots of the Zapf family goes back to 1523, when the damask weaver Johannes Zapf first appeared in Rothenburg . The Austrian line of the Zapf family is mentioned in a document around 1770, when Peter Zapf is listed as a hat maker in St. Georgen im Attergau . The founder Johann Zapf from the so-called Werfener Linie bought the “Fichtlhaus” property in Werfen in 1892, and the production of Zapf hats began.

In 1905 the company was awarded the title of " kuk chamber supplier ". At the hunting exhibition in Vienna in 1912 the Hutmacher Zapf company received the Diana medal in silver. The First World War and the economic crisis brought difficult times, but the company was still able to hold its own. In 1919 a branch was opened in Golling , and Ludwig Zapf took over the business in 1923. In 1926 the Lamberg hat was registered as the Salzburg state and folk costume hat. In 1934 a branch was opened in Badgastein. In 1935 and 1939 the workshops were rebuilt and enlarged.

At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 , Zapf received the bronze medal for hunting hats. During the Second World War , Hans Zapf began training as a hat maker in 1940.

After the war, there was another renovation and extension in 1950. In 1951 Hans Zapf successfully passed his master craftsman examination and married Hedwig Obauer in the same year. He took over the business in 1963 and the "Grünsteinhäusl" was built two years later.

In 1966 Hedwig Zapf d. J. († 1993) and 1968 Elfriede Zapf trained as a hat maker, in 1978 they successfully passed their master craftsman exams. In 1985 the company was converted into a limited partnership, Hedwig and Elfriede became managing directors.

With the permission of Otto von Habsburg , the company introduced the “Collection Habsburg” in 1991 alongside the already existing “Collection Zapf”. In the following year, the "Habsburg Collection" was presented to the public in Blühnbach Castle .

In 1993, Hans Zapf was awarded the Golden Badge of Merit of the State of Salzburg by Governor Hans Katschthaler . In 1996 Theresia Bartolot-Zapf became the second managing director.

In 1998 the company received the state award and has been allowed to use the federal coat of arms in business transactions ever since .

Theresia Bartolot has been the sole managing director and main shareholder of the GmbH since 2004. In addition to the headquarters in Werfen, Hutmacher Zapf also runs a hat shop in the heart of Salzburg's old town (Klampferergasse 6, 5020 Salzburg).

Products

The company primarily produces felt hats for women and men. The hats are produced by hand and are also worn as a symbol of folk culture and customs by, for example, members of local and traditional costume associations, music bands, etc.
