Hvalpsund

The Hvalpsund is a sound in the Limfjorden in Denmark . The narrow, deep sound forms the connection between Risgårde Bredning to Lovns Bredning and the Skive Fjord in the Limfjorden. At Hvalpsund is the village of the same name Hvalpsund on Himmerland .

history

There has been a ferry connection across the Sound from Hvalpsund to Sundsøre on Salling since 1523 . In the course of time, many ferry gaps occurred. As early as October 5, 1792, the newspaper Jyske Efterretninger wrote about an accident of September 23, 1792, in which the ferry, which was overloaded with 23 people, several hundredweights of rye and 18 sheep, filled with water. Before the ferrymen decided to throw the rye overboard, the ship sank. Only three of the passengers could be saved.

From 1927 to 1969, in addition to road vehicles, the smallest private railway ferry in Denmark, the Hvalpsund , operated by Aalborg-Hvalpsund Jernbaneselskab A / S, transported freight wagons across the sound.

The ferry with a car ferry now runs the ferry company Hvalpsund-Sundsøre Færgefart I / S .
