A hydrocolpos (from ancient Greek ὕδωρ hydor , German 'water' and κόλπος kolpos , German 'sheath' ) means that the vagina is filled with fluid. If the back pressure reaches into the uterine lumen, one speaks of a hydrometra or a hydrometrocolpos.

root cause

It is based on the occlusion of the vagina by hymeneal atresia or, more rarely, a vaginal membrane, a form of gynatresia . This fluid arises in the newborn periosis and consists of secretion from the hormonally stimulated vaginal mucosa on the maternal side. There is an association with Robinow syndrome , the uterus didelphys, or duplicates of the vagina and / or uterus.

diagnosis

This widening can be palpable or even visible as a tumor in the lower abdomen. The diagnosis is usually made by means of an ultrasound examination .

Differential diagnosis

Other cystic masses of the lower abdomen such as coccyx teratoma , lymphangioma , etc. are to be distinguished.

therapy

Treatment consists of surgical transection of the hymen or the obstructing membrane.
