Hydrolagus matallanasi is a very rare species of cartilaginous fish from the subclass of sea ​​cats , which occurs in the southwestern Atlantic, on the coast of Brazil, at depths of 400 to 750 meters. The species was only discovered in 2001 by a Brazilian research team led by Jesus Matallanas , after whom this species is also named. She lives across deep coral reefs that of sea fans , corals , tube sponge and sea lilies are formed.

Hydrolagus matallanasi becomes about 70 cm long. Hydrolagus matallanasi differs from other species of the genus Hydrolagus mainly in its brownish color with irregular spots and dots. The ventral side, the edge of the second dorsal fin facing the body and the base of the pectoral fin are whitish. The tooth plates are two-tone and striped yellowish-gray. The spine in front of the first dorsal fin is just as long or slightly longer than the head. The elongated second dorsal fin is indented in the middle. The pectoral fins are remarkably long and reach to the rear edge of the base of the pelvic fin. The diameter of the eyes is only slightly smaller than the length of the head area in front of the eyes.
