Hymenaios (Jerusalem)
Hymenaios (also Hymeneus ; † 298?) Was bishop of Jerusalem .
The exact date of his term of office, as well as that of his successors, is uncertain. Hymenaios succeeded Bishop Mazabanes around the year 260 . Its ecclesiastical significance lies in its participation in the deposition of Paul of Samosata as Bishop of Antioch ; this is documented by the so-called Hymenaios letter, which was written to Paul by several bishops from Palestine and Arabia and in which his problematic theological positions are addressed. However, it cannot be ruled out that this letter will later be a forgery.
How long Hymenaios held office before he was replaced by Zabdas (Zamudas) is unclear. In addition to the year 298, the year 276 is also mentioned as the year of Hymenaios' death.
