action
An IBM punched card is read regularly by a light beam. A single hole on the card, which lies apart from the other holes in a corner, wants to catch up with the other holes and be accepted into their community. It makes an effort to convince the holes, but is rejected by the group and finally fixed in its original location. The isolated hole manages to leave its position before the next light beam readout. Since the hole is missing, the IBM punch card is read incorrectly. The punch card, in turn, is part of the large machinery of a missile station. The wrong reading of the card leads to a breakdown of the machines. An alarm is triggered in the missile station: you can see a switch being thrown and noise followed by an explosion - possibly the beginning of a new world war.
Awards
Hypothèse Beta was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " in 1968 , but could not prevail against The Box .
