I'm the Slime is a 1973 single by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention from the album Over-Nite Sensation .
There are different live versions on the albums Zappa in New York and You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 1 . I'm the Slime and its B-side Montana can also be found on Zappa's posthumous compilation Strictly Commercial . The piece was played in concerts from 1973 to 1977 and 1984. It was also played by Dweezil Zappa as part of the Zappa Plays Zappa program , as can be seen on the DVD.
The text of the piece is political and socially critical as well as satirical.
Text and meaning
The piece consists of two parts; the first in the form of a "Who am I?" riddle:
“I am gross and perverted. I'm obsessed 'n deranged. I have existed for years, but very little has changed. I am the tool of the Government and industry too, for I am destined to rule and regulate you. I may be vile and pernicious, but you can't look away. I make you think I'm delicious, with the stuff that I say. I am the best you can get. Have you guessed me yet? "
Translated this means something like:
“I'm gross and perverted. I am obsessed and disturbed. I've existed for years, but very little has changed. I am the tool of the government and also of the (advertising) industry, because I am meant to rule and control you. I may be obnoxious and harmful, but you cannot look away. With the stuff I say, I make you think I'm appetizing. I am the best you can get Did you guess me? "
The second part deals with the evils of the personified thing mentioned in the first section , the various types of content that can be seen on American television .
