The International Astronomical Association Zauchen (IAAZ) is an Austrian astronomy association. The IAAZ operates owned by Eugen Freund located observatory Sankt Kanzian .

Club history

The association was founded on September 10, 2008 in Villach by six Carinthian amateur astronomers . In 2009, the Sankt Kanzian observatory was renovated by the IAAZ and prepared for management operations. Since then, regular tours have taken place again in the summer months. After two founding members left in 2010, two new members were recruited in 2013. Under the leadership of chairman Christoph Bilban and observatory manager Christian Zechner, the association's work concentrated entirely on the St. Kanzian observatory, which established this gem of Carinthian astronomical history as an excursion destination in the Klopeinersee region. In 2016, Christoph Bilban handed over the management of the association to Christian Zechner.

Purpose of the association

The purpose of the association is: "[...] the maintenance and promotion of amateur astronomy as well as participation in national and international projects. We also want to build up a network between amateur astronomical associations worldwide."

Observatory

The Helmrich Lambrecht observatory in Sankt Kanzian am Klopeinersee was built by Helmrich Lambrecht in the late 1950s and completed in 1961. The observatory is located near the center of Sankt Kanzian am Klopeinersee. On the roof of the house he built, Lambrecht built a dome 3.2 m in diameter, in which there are three telescopes on an equatorial mount with tracking. The equipment includes a 170 mm Newtonian with a focal length of 1500 mm, a 104/920 mm Newtonian as a guide scope and a photo tube with a Zeiss triplet optic with a diameter of 89 mm. Today the observatory is owned by Eugen Freund , Lambrecht's grandson.

Since the summer of 2009, there have been regular guided tours of the observatory during the summer months of July and August, and sometimes even September. The Sankt Kanzian observatory is very popular every year. Due to the interest of the visitors, adaptations and repairs to the observatory were necessary. In addition to modern audio and video equipment for lectures, the observation equipment was expanded to include mobile telescopes and large binoculars. The historically valuable dome with its old telescopes is still largely preserved in its original condition from the 1950s.
