They took place from June 4 to 14, 2009 in the Kallipatira Stadium on Rhodes (Greece). All 14 Paralympic disciplines for blind and visually impaired athletes could be held. There were 7 athletes from Germany (two women, five men), and two male athletes each from Austria and Switzerland.

IBSA Athletics European Open, Belgrade 2012

The 2009 IBSA European Championships were apparently just a one-off event. In 2012 there was an athletics event not designated as championships in the Serbian capital Belgrade , the IBSA Athletics European Open . This was organized by the IBSA and the National Paralympic Committee of Serbia. The competitions were held from April 20 to 28, 2012 in the Red Star Stadium . The training and warm-up area were the sports facilities of the Belgrade Military Academy . The competition results were recognized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and counted towards qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games in London .
