The ICA IS-28M is a two-seater motor glider made of metal , which was derived from the two-seater glider IS-28 designed by Iosif Silimon in 1970 . Later variants no longer have the abbreviation "IS" for the designer, but "IAR" as the abbreviation for "Industria Aeronautică Română". In some countries the motor glider version is also known as the IAR-34 .
construction
The motor glider IS-28M is - like all its variants - a two-seater motor glider in metal construction with a characteristic T-tail unit. The variant IS-28 M showed only minor changes compared to the original IS-28 - the fuselage was only modified to the extent that it was possible to accommodate an engine. For the first variant, the IS-28 M2, a new fuselage was constructed with seats next to each other and a semi-retractable tail wheel landing gear. This variant was powered by a Limbach aircraft engine with 60 hp. With the availability of the nominally 20 HP stronger Limbach L 2000, the M2 (?) Version was developed and equipped with the mechanically adjustable Hoffmann three- position propeller (take-off, cruise and sail position) known from other motor gliders such as the Grob G 109A in this combination . The wings of the IAR-28 MA variant were revised again.
Similar to the Diamond Aircraft Dimona , with the availability of the Rotax 912 aero engine, a two-seater, JAR - VLA approved training aircraft for powered flight training was derived by modifying the wings. This variant is known as IAR-46 and first flew in 1993.
use
The IS-28 M is suitable for training, training flights and cross-country flights. To demonstrate the travel capability of the IS-28 M2, three machines of this type were sent on a flight from Brașov , Romania to Tocumwal , Australia. They covered this distance in a flight time of 146 hours. Another trip across several continents was accomplished by a German crew who flew from Eisenach to Kathargo in an IS-28 M2 .
