iCOMP index
The ICOMP Index ( Intel COmparative Microprocessor Performance Index ) is a computer benchmark compiled by Intel to make the performance of the various processor models and lines comparable for the customer. The iCOMP was introduced in 1991 . The performance of the i486sx with 25 MHz was defined as 100. With the Pentium 4 , Intel switched to using megahertz numbers for classification. The iCOMP was also used by Intel for XScale processors.
Versions
iCOMP 1.0
In 1991 with the introduction of the Intel i486SX , Intel introduced the iCOMP index for the first time, in order to enable a comparison between the various processor models, starting with the i386SX . The focus was on 16- and 32-bit applications. The 486SX was defined as the base value with 25 MHz, and the results were scaled so that it received the value 100. With values from 22 for the 386SX-16 to 249 for the 486DX-50, a performance range of 1:10 was represented.
iComp 2.0
With the Pentium MMX , iCOMP 2.0 was introduced in 1997, which consisted only of 32-bit applications and placed a higher value on floating-point performance, as the competition ( AMD , Cyrix ) lagged significantly behind. The value was calculated from the results of the benchmarks using an internal key
- CPUmark32,
- Norton SI-32,
- SPECint_base95,
- SPECfp_base95 and the one specially designed for the Pentium MMX
- Intel Media Benchmark
composed. The key was chosen so that the Pentium 120, which had the value 1000 in the iCOMP 1.0, got 100 points. This suggested a 1:10 ratio, which was not given due to the different composition and weighting of the individual tests.
iCOMP 3.0
Since the Pentium III in the iCOMP 2.0, with the same clock rate, practically did not differ from the Pentium II (presented in January 1999), Intel published a revised standard in autumn 1998 . In addition to a changed selection of benchmarks, emphasis was placed on tests for the new SSE instructions. The iCOMP 3.0 consisted of 6 parts as individual applications
- WinTune 98 Advanced CPU Integer test,
- CPUmark 99,
- 3D WinBench 99-3D Lighting and Transformation Test,
- MultimediaMark 99,
- Jmark 2.0 Processor Test, and
- WinBench 99-FPU WinMark.
The Pentium II with 350 MHz with 1000 points was defined as the basis, but was not officially published. The increase from 483 iCOMP 2.0 points for the Pentium II with 450 MHz, to 1500 iCOMP 3.0 points for the 450 MHz Pentium III should underline the superiority of the new commands. iCOMP 2.0 values for the Pentium III processors were never published.
