IF Tönning (full name: Idrætsførening Tønning eV from 1946 ) is a sports club from Tönning in North Friesland . The association was founded in 1946. The first football team plays in the district class C. In 1976 the team took part in the DFB Cup .

history

The association was founded by members of the Danish minority . A first success was the championship in the district class Husum / Eiderstedt in 1955 and the promotion to the district class. In the following years the Tönninger became an elevator team between the district and district class. The club achieved its greatest successes in the mid-1970s.

In 1975 IF missed promotion to the district league after a playoff against Handewitter SV . A year later, after a 3-1 victory over Frisia Husum , the Tönninger won the district cup and qualified for the first main round of the DFB Cup, where they met the then second division Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Since at that time an amateur club did not automatically have home rights to a professional club, the game took place in Leverkusen .

In order to be able to finance the trip to Leverkusen at all, each player had to make a contribution of 160 marks . Bayer 04 Leverkusen won the game on August 7, 1976 4-0 in front of 1,300 spectators. In the 1976/77 season IF was champion of the district class and rose to the district league, but had to relegate again after one season. In 1984 he was relegated to the district league.

In the 1989/90 seasons and from 1992 to 1996 IF returned to the district class. Most recently, the team was district champion in 2008, but missed promotion to the newly created association league . This was achieved in 2013. IF Tönning is now playing in the 11th class district class C (as of 2018/19).
