Konrad Balder Schäuffelen

Konrad Balder Schäuffelen (born June 16, 1929 in Ulm ; † October 19, 2012 ) was a German psychiatrist , author of Concrete and Visual Poetry and translator .

Life

Schäuffelen studied medicine and philosophy in Tübingen, Munich, Paris and Frankfurt am Main (from 1949 to 1956 and from 1958 to 1962). The topic of his dissertation was cerebral decompensation symptoms during treatment with phenothiazines and Tofranil (Diss. Frankfurt 1959). He stayed several times for long periods in Rome, Prague and the Middle East. From 1966 to 1970 Schäuffelen worked as a psychiatrist at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich. After his subsequent training as a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst , he worked in his own practice and as a freelance writer and translator in Munich.

The focus of his literary work in the 1950s was the production of experimental and visual poetry. Since the beginning of the 1960s, Schäuffelen has primarily produced language and book objects as well as audio-visual installations . In 1979 he was awarded the Schwabing Art Prize in the sculpture / sculpture category.

In 2006 he was invited by the cultural association SCHLOSS GOLDEGG / State of Salzburg to respond with an exhibition or an installation to the magnificent Renaissance knight's hall of the palace. He decided to put the court jester frescoed there at the center of his exhibition project entitled "The Fool's Hat". "Der Narrenhut" was shown in a modified form in 2007 in Munich in the Artothek and in Ulm in the Künstlerhaus.

One of his last artistic appearances was in 2009 in the Munich Night of Experimental Music: In "Until Falling", the title of the impressive short performance, he set 16 mechanical children's tops in motion with three assistants ...
