iFolder is software from Novell . IFolder makes it easy to keep files in sync on multiple computers .

functionality

iFolder is a .NET-based client-server system, in which the iFolder client must be installed in addition to a central server on the user computers. If an iFolder system is set up, it enables users to work with shared directories: If a user marks a directory on his computer as an iFolder directory, this is communicated to the central server, which then creates its own copy. As soon as the user changes something in this iFolder directory, these changes are synchronized with the copy on the server. The user can also invite other users to also access the directory. A copy of the directory is then also stored on their computers, which compares all changes with the server. This means that every user who has access rights to the directory has the same documents and the same version as the other users.

In addition, access via a web interface is possible in order to grant access even if the user is at a computer without an iFolder client.

Earlier versions of the iFolder client supported not only the server-based operation but also a peer-to-peer operation without the need for a central server. This function was limited to local networks . From version 3.8 this is no longer supported. It is currently unknown if the feature will return in future releases.

The last current version is from December 14th 2011. Open source alternatives are e.g. B. OwnCloud , Nextcloud or Seafile . There are also many commercial providers .
