ownCloud is free software for storing data ( file hosting ) on your own server . If a corresponding client is used, it is automatically synchronized with a local directory. This means that a consistent database can be accessed from several computers. The project was launched in January 2010 by KDE developer Frank Karlitschek to create a free alternative to commercial cloud service providers. In contrast to commercial storage services, ownCloud can be installed on a private server or web space . In this way, especially with sensitive data, concerns about data transfer and the associated transfer of control over the data can be dispelled.
The project uses PHP scripts to access an SQLite , MySQL or PostgreSQL database installed on the server . ownCloud can be addressed via a web interface. This means that the client is not tied to a specific operating system. But also other applications, such as file managers or groupware , can address the ownCloud via a WebDAV interface and provide files and data locally.
history
The ownCloud project was launched in 2010 and the associated company was founded in 2011.
Nextcloud as a fork
Nextcloud is a fork from ownCloud. After the founder of ownCloud, Frank Karlitschek, left the company of the same name in April 2016, he and other former developers announced an ownCloud fork and a new company to promote the platform on June 2nd . Both the fork and the company are called Nextcloud.
ownCloud under new management
In July 2016 ownCloud GmbH was able to win a new investor and CEO. The assets of ownCloud Inc., formerly based in the USA, were also taken over. Since then, ownCloud has reorganized and has gained new employees, customers and partners.
In 2017, ownCloud was able to increase its sales by more than 50% compared to the previous year and in October 2018 won first place for the third time in the "Storage-Insider Readers' Choice Awards" for enterprise file sharing.
In 2018 ownCloud launched its own SaaS offer for small and medium-sized companies and associations. The offer is intended to enable a secure and GDPR- compliant collaboration solution for organizations without their own IT department.
In March 2019 ownCloud launched in cooperation with the State Office for digitization, broadband and surveying Bayern the BayernBox , an ownCloud-based collaboration solution for Bavarian municipalities. For this purpose, an automated ownCloud instance was set up for each of the more than 2000 Bavarian municipalities.
In order to bring the architecture of the iOS app up to the state of the art, ownCloud released a completely new iOS app in June 2019 with full compatibility with the iOS Files app. In contrast to the old app, it was made available for free.
Sync clients
ownCloud desktop clients are available for macOS , Windows , Linux , BSD and other Unix-like operating systems. Ready-to-use DEB / RPM packages are available for the major Linux distributions. In version 12.1, openSUSE was the first operating system that ownCloud officially supported.
There are also apps for the mobile operating systems Android , iOS , Windows 10 mobile , Fire OS and Sailfish OS . These are also available as open source.
Range of functions
ownCloud supports the following functions:
- File storage in conventional directory structures (also via WebDAV )
