Web space

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term web space describes a storage space for files on a server that can be permanently accessed via the Internet . This online storage space is provided by Internet service providers so that customers can save and publish documents and databases (such as music files), websites or parts of them. The provision of storage space on the Internet is called web hosting or nethosting.

Web hosting is an IT service that is usually characterized by the amount of storage capacity , an upper limit for traffic and special functions such as script languages that can be executed on the server (such as PHP , Perl , Python , ASP ). Providers are rated on the basis of the average server availability per year, the loading speed and the support provided with technical problems. For this purpose, various independent rating platforms for comparing providers have been established. Hosting is usually offered together with a domain as part of a term contract.

Variants of web space

The basic functions are the same for both free and paid web space offers. The lack of data backup options for free web space are sometimes criticized. In contrast, they have good support , as many such web space providers have a community membership as a basic requirement, which in turn means that competent help is always available at any time. Free provision is usually provided through financing with advertising banners or pop-up advertising windows.

The paid web space offers, among other things, more data backup options. Furthermore, the availability and retrieval of data is better at peak times. In most cases, the use of paid web space is recommended for the business sector, while the free web space is indicated as sufficient for the private sector.

Brand name

The term webspace has meanwhile existed as a registered trademark at the German Patent and Trademark Office and was actively used for warnings against providers by Günter Freiherr von Gravenreuth . An initiative founded as a result, through the lead lawyers Boris Höller and Jochen Krieger, enforced the deletion of this trademark registration. In February 2000, the trademark was finally canceled by the German Patent and Trademark Office. In a procedure led by the lawyer Hans-Joachim Rauschhofer, the LG Bochum overturned the preliminary injunction based on the register mark on October 14, 1999 (14 O 120/99).
