Roundabout & Calonge

Phallus atrovolvatus is a type of mushroom from the family of stinkhorn relatives (Phallaceae). It was discovered in 2005 by Francisco Calonge and Hanns Kreisel in Costa Rica .

features

At first, the phallus atrovolvatus appears as a 2–3 cm wide, black colored witch's egg with a rough surface. When ripe, the witch's egg opens and the cylindrical, white receptaculum stretches out, which is 1–2 cm wide and 2–4 cm long. At the upper end of the receptaculum there is a conical cap , which is covered by the yellow-brown colored gleba . A fragile, net-like structure (a so-called indusium ) hangs down from the underside of the cap . In contrast to other representatives of the stinkhorn-like species , the gleba of Phallus atrovolvatus does not have an unpleasant, carrion-like odor, but a pleasantly sweet scent.

ecology

In phallus atrovolvatus is a Saprobionten which individually or in small groups on lawns , plant debris and dead wood appears.

distribution

Phallus atrovolvatus is only known from the Costa Rican provinces of Limón and Guanacaste , but was also collected in Hawaii . In Limón, the species has been identified near Cahuita , while it has been found in Guanacaste in La Fortuna National Park . Finds from India have also been known since 2013.
