As Hexenei the particular stage of development is generally Stinkmorchelartigen (Phallales) referred to in which the fruiting bodies grow initially as egg-shaped structure. During ripening, the inner receptacle stretches , tears the peridia and lifts out the spore mass ( gleba ) that remains moist . This process can take place very quickly and is associated with the release of intense smells to attract insects. These processes in connection with the often bright colors and the unusual shapes of the fruit bodies led to various imaginative names.
Witch eggs occur in stink morels ( phallus ), latticework (e.g. squid mushroom ( Clathrus archeri ), red lattice ( Clathrus ruber )) and dog's rods ( Mutinus ).
