Frank Karlitschek (born July 25, 1973 in Reutlingen ) is a German open source software developer from Stuttgart , known as the founder and developer of the cloud software ownCloud (2010) and its fork Nextcloud (2016).

Life

Frank Karlitschek studied computer science at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen .

Free software / KDE

From 1998 to 2004 Frank Karlitschek headed a web development team at an internet agency and started the community website KDE-Look.org and later GNOME-Look.org in the summer of 2001 in order to stimulate and expand the open development process for free software projects . Over time, these projects grew more and more on and with other projects (e.g. KDE-Apps.org). In 2007 he founded his first startup hive01 GmbH and started openDesktop.org as a website network for over twenty sub-projects (KDE-Look.org, KDE-Apps.org, GNOME-Look.org, Open-PC and others). From July 2009 to February 2012 he was a member of the board and vice-president of KDE eV The openDesktop.org platform was taken over by KDE eV in 2016 to give Karlitschek the opportunity to devote himself to the cloud projects OwnCloud and Nextcloud.

Owncloud

In January 2010 Karlitschek started the free software project ownCloud as part of a CampKDE keynote and published version 1.0 in June 2010. In November 2011, he co-founded ownCloud Inc., which provided commercial support for ownCloud. He served as CTO , leading product development and community relations. At the end of April 2016, Karlitschek left ownCloud Inc.

Nextcloud

Five weeks later, in June 2016, Karlitschek started the Nextcloud fork, which should take the interests of the developer and user community into account more than ownCloud. Almost the entire development team switched to Nextcloud GmbH, which supports the project commercially.

further activities

Karlitschek is an activist for the protection of privacy and has launched several initiatives to make the Internet safer and more federal. Examples of this are the social desktop concept in 2008 , the Open Collaboration Services in 2009 and the "User Data Manifesto" in 2012 and the "User Data Manifesto 2.0" in 2015. His blog is headlined with the statement "Privacy is the foundation of democracy." Karlitschek is a regular keynote speaker at various conferences such as LinuxCon, Latinoware, openSUSE Conf and the KDE Akademy.
