Social desktop
The idea behind the social desktop is to enable interaction with online communities and web collaboration even from conventional computer desktops . Furthermore, the basic idea of the social desktop is to enable communication between individual members of the online community. Other components are user-generated content such as programs, illustrations, a jointly maintained event database and knowledge databases.
Especially in open source - desktop environments such as KDE or Gnome is actively working on an integration. KDE 4.3, released in July 2009, integrated a social desktop plasmoid for the first time. Frank Karlitschek first presented the social desktop in 2008 at the KDE developer conference aKademy.
Backend
The Open Collaboration Services API, a REST-based API , which was developed by openDesktop.org and defined as the freedesktop.org standard , serves as the backend of the social desktop .
Components of the social desktop
news
Strongly personalized messages for the user from his circle of friends with selected dates and news
People and groups
Group functions allow users to find other users with the same interests, to get to know them and to meet with them. Discussions within the groups are also possible, and shared knowledge and data sharing is also possible.
activities
Informs the user about what is happening in his circle of friends, if z. E.g. a friend has posted a new blog entry or is looking for a new job.
Events
The event database provides information about open source conferences or Linux user meetings in the vicinity of the user. Every user can organize and register their own events, take part in others and comment.
Knowledge base
Questions and answers regarding certain programs can be asked and answered. It is also possible to describe tips and tricks on the part of the user or the project owner.
implementation
All of the components described can already be viewed and used on the openDesktop.org website. An initial implementation of the idea in the form of a plasmoid, a small desktop applet for the KDE desktop, is already available. Version 4.3 of the KDE desktop will have this integrated.
In addition, the official KDE community forum is working on implementing and integrating the Open Collaboration Services API for the platform.
