Linux User Group

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Linux User Group ( LUG ) is a group of people and users interested in Linux who meet regularly to discuss, exchange knowledge, learn from one another and network with one another. Most LUG meetings and events take place in larger cities. Some call themselves Linux Stammtisch or are now registered as an association . The LUGs organize, for example, “installation parties” - the Linux operating system is permanently installed on computers brought along. The topics are not limited to the Linux operating system, but also deal with free software (open source). Related fringe topics such as computer ethics, network politics, artificial intelligence or questions about other operating systems as well as programming, administration and configuration are discussed. A lively exchange of experiences also takes place in Internet forums and mailing lists , whereby since the development of the numerous Linux derivatives a large number of groups, some of which specialize in certain distributions , have formed.

Analogous to LUGs, there are also Unix User Groups (UUG) that deal with other Unix derivatives , for example with the freely available BSDs ( FreeBSD , OpenBSD , NetBSD ), but also with commercial Unix versions. Other terms that do not refer directly to Linux, Unix or BSD are also common. But most of them have the term " free " in their name, which refers to free software.

Country groups

In Austria there is the Linux User Group Austria (LUGA) as well as individual LUGs in larger cities ( Salzburg , Sankt Pölten , Linz , Graz ) and in all federal states except Burgenland (there is a subgroup of the Burgenland Internet Club that plays a similar role) . The Austrian LUGs, together with other associations, organize the Linux weeks once a year . In Switzerland , in addition to the LUGS (Linux User Group Switzerland), there are also regional user groups in larger cities ( Basel , Bern etc.) or in larger regions ( Upper Valais , Canton Aargau etc.). Once a year, a LUG alternately organizes the LUG camp, where the German-speaking LUGs meet regularly.

In Italy there are LUGs in many cities, which are summarized in the so-called Italian Linux Society (ILS for short). Every year (since 2006 end of October) they organize a nationwide Linuxday . Since approx. 2016 this event has also been linked to the Linux Presentation Day . B. listed on linux-events.org.
