The Linux Presentation Day ( LPD to German Linux presentation day ) is a decentralized exhibition for free software with the main focus on Linux , which beginners different distributions is to bring closer and the use of Linux. The event is hosted by volunteers.

Concept and naming

The name was proposed by Philipp von der Linden at a board meeting of the Berlin Linux User Group in order to capture the core intention of the concept presented there by Hauke Laging, namely to organize an event that will present the free Linux operating system to everyone. H. to introduce or demonstrate who have not yet been able to make any "tangible" acquaintance with it. This should be done using as many distributions as possible installed on existing devices and enable interested visitors to try out controls, functions and programs directly.

History 2015-2018

Typical event sign

The reason for planning the Linux Presentation Day (LPD) was the LinuxTag , which was canceled in 2015 . However, the event is not intended as a substitute for this. Instead, the LPD has made it its mission to make Linux more successful on the desktop. According to the idea and initiator Hauke Laging, there should be no lecture program and instead an event with "everyday Linux to look at and touch for normal people". In addition, the event grew from a purely Berlin phenomenon within a year to a Europe-wide event.

2015

In May 2015 the first Linux Presentation Day took place (“LPD 2015.1” for short) at 8 locations in Berlin. The second LPD 2015.2 was held by the initiator of the BeLUG on November 14, 2015 in about 75 cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland by extending it to other Linux- related organizations such as various LUGs, CCCs and other organizations and companies. The number of visitors was officially estimated at 1500 by the organizers.

In addition to the presentation of different old PCs and notebooks with different Linux desktops from different distributions , Raspberry Pis with different Linux variants were also shown at some locations . In addition, other organizations such as the Freifunk initiative took part at some locations . A special Knoppix LPD edition 2015 (based on a prerelease of version 7.6.0) was also distributed on various occasions.

2016

The LPD 2016.1, completed on April 30, 2016, took place not only in the German-speaking countries but also in some other European countries. The number of visitors was officially estimated at 1500 by the organizers.

The autumn LPD 2016.2 took place on October 22nd, 2016, which was essentially also held in some other European countries such as Italy. Initiatives in at least 15 European countries at hundreds of locations should already present Linux as an alternative to PC and notebook. The organizers were reported to have had around 1,100 visitors.

2017

On Saturday, May 6th 2017 was the official date of the LPD 2017.1. The organizers were able to gain a few more countries. The LPD 2017.2 took place on November 18, 2017, in individual cities on a different date.

2018

Linux Presentation Day 2018.1 took place on April 18, 2018. Linux Presentation Day 2018.2 took place on November 10, 2018. As always, there are deviations from this date in some places.

LPD 2.0

After the initiator Hauke Laging (from the Berlin LUG) withdrew from the organization, the so-called LPD 2.0 is being continued by a small organizational team led by Frank Nagel (from the Braunschweig LUG). In an email entitled "Changeover of the LPD organization in Germany" to lpd-de-info on April 14, 2019 at 4:22 pm, Hauke officially announced the new team on the lpd.org website.

2019

After the start in Berlin and expansion to Germany, Switzerland and Austria, the Benelux countries, France and especially Italy are now an integral part of at least one of the two LPD dates (spring and autumn). The currently proposed dates and the commitments received can be found on the lpd.org website.
