Collabora Online is an adapted version of LibreOffice Online , an online office that can be operated on your own hardware . The target group are companies and cloud providers. Collabora Online works with storage services such as ownCloud or Nextcloud . A demo version for the browser that requires registration is available online . Collabora Online Development Edition (CODE) is free software that can be tried out freely in the browser via Docker and is aimed at home users and developers. However, unlike the business version, this has no support.

history

Collabora Online emerged from LibreOffice Online at the end of 2016 and works together with the cloud services ownCloud and Nextcloud.

The first version of Collabora Online was announced at the beginning of June 2016.

At the end of 2016, Collabora Online 2.0 appeared, which mainly added functions for collaboration. Version 2.0 of the Collabora Online Development Edition (CODE) brought various bug fixes and improvements, as well as a responsive design for mobile devices .

Version 2.1 introduced many simplifications in the use as well as more possibilities for collaboration.

CODE 3.0 was released in December 2017. Collabora Online 3.0 added some functions such as a spelling correction , as well as more filter and formatting functions. Administrators can also use more console commands, such as As to the utilization of the servers - CPU display. In addition, saving and uploading has been improved and IPv6 has been supported.

Integrations with other software

At the end of 2016, the groupware Kolab Now integrated Collabora Online. As of version 17.1, the EGroupware business software has integrated Collabora Online. As of version 6.4, Intermesh's groupware Group Office also offers integration.

Advantages and disadvantages of the cloud solution

The general advantage of cloud solutions is that the documents can be accessed from any device with internet access and they can be edited together with several people ( collaboration ). It is often seen as a disadvantage that internet access is required and one is dependent on the speed of one's own internet access and the server. The disadvantage of all proprietary solutions that their own data come under the control of (usually US) external companies, is countered by this solution that all technical components remain controllable and external assignments can be targeted, selectively and also monitored trustworthy partners can be assigned within their own jurisdiction (e.g. EU GDPR).

The disadvantage of all cloud-based office solutions is currently (as of September 2018) that the capabilities of conventional desktop applications are not yet fully mapped.
