EGroupware is a multi-user groupware , also known as collaboration software , which has been developed on the basis of PHP .

EGroupware provides functions such as e-mail, calendar, task management, project management, file manager, time documentation or wiki via a web interface. The functions can be activated as modules as required. The software emerged from a spin-off of the free phpGroupWare . The project distributes its software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). The development team consists of 68 developers from the USA, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany.

EGroupware is open source software. There is a free version for both private and commercial use. The free open source option from EGroupware is called Community Edition "CE". This is licensed under the GNU General Public License v.2.0 (GPL2). Commercial technical support and hosting plans are also available for EGroupware. The EGroupware Enterprise Line "EPL" provides all software functions including support. Customers for this are medium-sized companies, corporations as well as educational and research institutions. In Brazil, EGroupware is used by many authorities and companies and works there in networks with more than 10,000 clients.

properties

EGroupware is developed in the PHP scripting language and is therefore platform-independent (Linux, Windows, BSD Server). Various open source databases ( MySQL , PostgreSQL , MaxDB ) or Microsoft SQL Server can be used as databases . The authentication can take place against the own user accounts in SQL or LDAP, or against an external system, for example mail server, Active Directory server (ADS).

The proprietary groupware servers such as Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino are comparable programs . EGroupware can already manage the complete mail server for many mail servers. List of mail servers:

Since EGroupware can be changed or expanded with your own functionalities, there are open source ERP systems that use EGroupware as a platform.

Versions and version history

Version 1.4 was released in May 2007. The program has undergone significant further development, especially in the address book, calendar and user management. The next version should contain a new program for central file storage that combines the functions of Filemanager and MyDMS.

Version 1.6 was officially announced for November 25, 2008. In addition to the file storage already mentioned above, this includes new functions in the e-mail client and help desk. The design of the surface has also been optimized. Many suggestions and bug fixes from the community were incorporated during development.

For a short time, Tine 2.0 was an official sub-project of EGroupware. This sub-project was about the development of future technologies for the EGroupware project. Due to internal discrepancies, the EGroupware project and Tine 2.0 separated from each other in February 2008.

The first professional version of EGroupware has been available since July 2009 and is sold in the form of a software subscription . This product line called "EGroupware Premium Line" includes a maintenance contract for the source code and corresponding RPMs so that automatic updates are possible.

Version 14.2 has been available since December 2014. E-Share option: As of version 14.2, the EGroupware Filemanager includes a file sharing option for simplified file exchange. It includes z. B. the possibility to send share links to files to people who do not use EGroupware. Files can also be moved using drag and drop . The filemanager is used as an alternative to the Dropbox filehosting service . Home screen: The home screen is a virtual pin board that is intended to make important contacts, projects or tasks more quickly accessible to the user. Mobile template: The third new feature from 14.2 is the mobile template, which has been optimized for small screens and touch controls. It enables the use of EGroupware on tablets and supports operation via swiping gestures and adjustment of the format when the device is rotated.

Version 16.1 of the open source collaboration software EGroupware is available for download. The software brings a new interface for mobile devices as well as end-to-end encryption with PGP. The cloud version can be tested for 30 days. The makers of EGroupware have completely revised the user interface in the browser. The calendar, for example, allows drag and drop as well as context menus. Responsiveness for narrow displays such as on smartphones or tablets has also been added. New templates are available for the desktop. Under the hood, the Mailvelope plug-in enables end-to-end encryption of emails with PGP . Synchronization with mobile devices runs via the free ActiveSync implementation Z-Push 2.3.

Version 17.1 extends the possibilities of collaboration through the integration of Collabora Online Office . Texts or tables can be edited together in real time. All of the data collected in EGroupware is available online for further processing via template documents with placeholders. The storage as PDF takes place again directly in the online office. In addition, the developers have now also integrated S / MIME encryption into the 17.1 ; no extra browser plug-in is required for this and is therefore also available on mobile devices. The login page and the internal notifications have been revised. The address book offers a flexible duplicate search and bulk merging of duplicates.

Version 19.1 is only offered as a Docker container. In addition, two-factor authentication and a messenger function were implemented. Furthermore, the GDPR has been taken into account.

Synchronization with mobile devices

EGroupware can be synchronized with Apple and Android devices. Appointments, address book entries and tasks from the Infolog application are synchronized here. The eSync and CalDAV network protocols are used for this.

EGroupware in a package

EGroupware has been part of the groupware package since 2015. This follows the principles of the Open Cloud Alliance (OCA) initiated by IBM and Univention at the end of last year . For users, this means that they can run all programs offered under these conditions at any time in their own data center or move to an alternative cloud service provider. Univention Corporate Server , a server operating system derived from Debian, provides the technical substructure . OpenCms covers the area of content management. EGroupware contributes the address book, task management, e-mail, calendar, online file services, project and resource management, ticket system, wiki and knowledge database components.
