phpGroupWare is a multi-user groupware designed to improve collaboration between project teams. The system, which is sold as free software , provides functions for exchanging information within companies or organizations .

phpGroupWare includes some basic applications that project members can use to communicate and plan and manage appointments. Since phpGroupWare is web-based , a web browser is required to use it. This means that, provided that you have an Internet connection, you can work together across the world.

The system can be expanded by integrating additional modules and also offers a programming interface (API) for in-house development of extensions. The project was implemented using the PHP scripting language , which uses a MySQL or PostgreSQL database for data management .

The following basic applications are included:

  • E-mail (a mail server required)
  • calendar
  • directory
  • Bookmarks
  • Chat
  • Forum
  • notes
  • tasks
  • Project management
  • Helpdesk / Trouble Ticket System

In 2003, some developers split the project and developed it further under the name EGroupware (now a proprietary version as such ).

The system can (with restrictions) be seen as an alternative to Microsoft Exchange Server or Lotus Notes . While the two commercial software packages come with mail server software, PHPGroupware depends on an existing mail server ( sendmail or similar) in order to be able to offer all the features.
