Tine 2.0 is free software for digital collaboration in companies and organizations. It is published under version 3 of the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL) and is being actively developed and offered by Metaways Infosystems GmbH.

Tine 2.0 is platform-independent and implemented as a service-oriented architecture (SOA). It mainly consists of the following parts:

  • The server component, this acts as a data source and was implemented in PHP . To store the data it uses a SQL - database .
  • The client component, this is the GUI for interacting with the user. It is written in JavaScript and is displayed in the user's web browser .

Furthermore, Tine 2.0 consists of various APIs which are based on Ext JS and Zend Framework .

history

The development of Tine 2.0 began with various problems in the EGroupware project. First discussions were held in March 2007, in which some developers wanted to improve the quality and implementation of eGroupWare. This discussion was conducted under the heading eGroupWare 2.0 . In July 2007 the first design studies were published, in which a new user interface should be created. The new concepts were described in detail in November 2007. The idea behind the discussion at the time was to improve the code base of eGroupWare. Not all developers accepted the proposed changes. The main problem was compatibility with previous versions.

After the naming problem was solved, Tine 2.0 moved into the eGroupWare SVN repository. At that time, the main goal was to try out new technologies for new eGroupWare versions.

Since the proposed changes were not included in the eGroupWare project, Tine 2.0 split off from the eGroupWare project.

The two main developers of Tine 2.0 decided to continue Tine 2.0 as an independent project. Tine 2.0 has a completely newly developed code base, but is based on the experience from the eGroupWare project. The name Tine 2.0 is an abbreviation for T his i s n ot e groupware (This is not eGroupWare). This is to symbolize that Tine 2.0 is not a spin-off from eGroupWare, but an independent new development.

Since 2016, the Business Edition , which is based on the Community Edition developed in parallel, has been established with version 2016.11 . It is based on the stability required by the market, whereas the Community Edition focuses on new functions.

Since then, Tine 2.0 has been offered in three versions.

  • Tine 2.0 Business Edition
  • Tine 2.0 Community Edition
  • Tine 2.0 Individual Development which builds on the Tine 2.0 Business Edition.
