Randy Edwini-Bonsu (born April 20, 1990 in Kumasi , Ghana ) is a Canadian - Ghanaian football player on the position of a striker . He is currently in the squad of Tennis Borussia Berlin .

Career

youth

Edwini-Bonsu, who emigrated from Ghana to Canada with his parents in 2002, attended the Landsdowne Elementary School in Edmonton shortly after his relocation . He then attended Burnaby Central Secondary School in Burnaby , British Columbia , where he was active in the local soccer team, among other things. He later attended the Green & Gold Soccer Club at the University of Alberta , where he was in the youth teams. From 2003, the native Ghanaian played for Southwest United in the Edmonton Interdistrict Youth Soccer Association ( EIYSA ), where he finally played in the youth team until 2006.

In his final year at the club he won the Alberta championship with the local U-16 team and also secured second place at the Canadian Club Championship in Moncton , New Brunswick . After his involvement in the lowlands of Canadian youth football, Edwini-Bonsu moved to France in 2007 , where he trained with the U-18 and reserve team of FC Metz . On the side, he traveled through Germany with his compatriot Adam Straith and other Canadian youth players for two weeks in October 2007 and played six different test matches, including against the youth teams of FC Bayern Munich , VfB Stuttgart and TSV 1860 Munich .

Club career

After his return from the Lorraine region , Edwini-Bonsu was accepted into the team by Vancouver Whitecaps Residency , the reserve team of the Vancouver Whitecaps playing in the fourth-rate North American USL Premier Development League . After he scored nine goals in 15 games during the 2008 season and thus drew attention to the professional team playing in the second-rate USL First Division at the time , he was subsequently accepted into the professional squad by the reserve team in mid-August 2008.

As early as November 7, 2007, when he was on the bench for the full game in a 0-0 draw in a friendly against Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy , he narrowly failed to make a team debut, despite the Vancouver Caps during the game a total of seven different players came on. After moving up to the professional squad in mid-August 2008, he made his professional debut on August 20, when he was substituted on for Jamaican Nicholas Addlery in the 0-0 draw against Seattle Sounders in the 83rd minute .

After only a few short appearances in his first professional season, the striker was increasingly used from the 2009 season. However, he did not manage to establish himself as a regular player, which was partly due to an injury he got in the game. In order to get back into the game slowly, Edwini-Bonsu was given back to the reserve team on loan to keep fit there and to gain more match practice. Until 2011 he played in the reserve team.

One day after his 21st birthday, Edwini-Bonsu and the Whitecaps parted ways. Edwini-Bonsu announced that “it was time to move back to Europe”.

In June 2011, the Finnish club AC Oulu announced the signing of the striker.

In November 2011, Eintracht Braunschweig announced his commitment until summer 2013, after the end of the winter break he played for the second division for the first time. The striker made his debut for Lower Saxony on February 5, 2012 (20th matchday) in the away game at Eintracht Frankfurt , when he came on for Mathias Fetsch in the 68th minute .

On March 4, 2012 (24th matchday) Randy celebrated his home game debut in a competitive game for Eintracht Braunschweig , where he came on in the 32nd minute for Damir Vrančić . His substitution laid the foundation for the 3-2 victory over Hansa Rostock : Randy initiated an attack that led to the second Braunschweiger goal. In the 79th minute he could only be stopped by a foul; the subsequent directly converted free kick by Nico Zimmermann was also the final result of the match. In the period that followed, Edwini-Bonsu was unable to secure a regular place in Braunschweig, and his contract, which expired at the end of the 2012/13 season, was not extended. Although he even managed to get promoted to the first Bundesliga with Braunschweig at the end of the 2012/2013 season.

From January 24, 2014 until the end of the 2014/2015 season, the striker was under contract with the third division side Stuttgarter Kickers . In summer 2015 he switched to VfR Aalen . After a season at VFR Aalen, Bonsu joined FC Homburg. After Bonsu relegated with the Saarlanders from the Regionalliga Südwest to the Oberliga in summer 2017 , he left the club. In autumn, after a brief absence from a club, he was signed by the former Bundesliga club Tennis Borussia Berlin for the Oberliga Nordost .

International

The attacking player made his first appearances for a junior national team in 2005, when he played in friendly tests for the Canadian U-15 national team. He came to Mexico for further test matches for the team in 2007 during a youth tournament . Edwini-Bonsu had his first real U-15 mission on September 29, 2005 against the U-15 selection from New Zealand . From 2006 to 2007 he played 15 games for the U-17 of Canada , for which he scored two goals. He scored his first international goal in a 10-0 win over the Bermuda youth team on August 15, 2006.

After a successful time with the U-17 team, he was called up to the Canadian U-20 national team in 2008 , for which he has scored three times in five games to date. Among other things, he took part with the team in the CONCACAF U-20 Gold Cup 2009 in Trinidad and Tobago . In January 2010 Edwini-Bonsu and his teammate from the Vancouver Whitecaps, Philippe Davies , were called to a training camp for the Canadian U-23 team (Olympic team).

Only shortly after his call-up to the U-23 team, the 1.68 m tall striker was elected to the Canadian senior national team and trained with the team from mid-January. The Ghanaian-born made his senior national team debut on January 31, 2010 when he came on as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat by Jamaica in the second half. In 2012 Edwini-Bonsu was appointed to the squad of the Canadian U-23 selection for the North American qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games in London . Due to a red card in the second round game, he missed the qualifying semi-final against Mexico , which Canada lost 3-1.

After a break of more than three years, Edwini-Bonsu returned to the Canadian senior team on March 22, 2013. In a friendly against Japan in Doha , he was in the starting line-up of his team. In a friendly against Puerto Rico on March 30, 2015, he scored his first international goal.
