Lists on the subject

The INDEP LUSA is a Portuguese submachine gun.

In 1983 INDEP in Lisbon began developing a submachine gun that was to replace the HK MP5 from Heckler & Koch as an inexpensive replacement . INDEP / FBP is a Portuguese state company that was commissioned to manufacture HK G3 under license from H&K. The name Lusa is derived from "Lusitania", which corresponds to today's Portugal. Although developed as a military weapon, the MP is also suitable for police use. The grip is almost identical to that of the H&K G3 and has a three-shot burst circuit. Due to the small external dimension of only 445 mm overall length, it is suitable for concealed carrying in personal protection . A silencer can be installed for special operations .

Changes and improvements to the LUSA were an ongoing process during extensive testing. After several interruptions and development costs of 2.5 million dollars, the LUSA-A2 was ready for series production in 1994. In the end only 390 pieces were built. They were all extradited to the GNR (Guarda National Republicana, Military Police). The police in Cyprus also intended to buy the weapon, but they never did. Reports of the use of the weapon in other parts of the Portuguese army could not be confirmed. INDEP has now completely stopped production of G 3, so no more parts are manufactured for the LUSA. The tools were sold to the American company JLD, which wanted to use them to manufacture a semi-automatic version for the US market. Currently (2009) the weapon is offered in different versions by the company LUSA USA .

One advantage of the LUSA is that it is a shooting weapon with a locking compound, i.e. the construction with a separate striking piece for the firing pin has a very positive effect on the precision of the single shot, as it avoids the bouncing blow of the bolting compound . This means that the MP can also be used with a telescopic sight as a precision weapon at close range up to 100 m. The shape of the breech block supports the precision in the burst and ensures a steady shot behavior, as a large part of the breech block is above and in front of the chamber at the moment of the shot and thus counteracts the rise of the weapon.
