iPKG

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

iPKG (acronym for Itsy Package Management System , English for "tiny package management system") is a discontinued, free software (under GPL ) for package management . The format was designed as a package manager for computers with few resources and is sometimes used. a. used by Openmoko , Zaurus and OpenWrt . During the development, special emphasis was placed on the following points:

  • The control programs themselves are very small.
  • The installed metadata is limited to the most important things.
  • The available packages are as small as possible. The package - tree should be very finely granulated.

Packages in this format have the extension .ipk . This format is derived from the Debian packaging system . Therefore it is relatively easy to convert existing Debian packages into iPKG format, so packages usually do not have to be created from scratch. Starting with version 0.99, iPKG supports Debian packages directly.

iPKG has not been further developed since 2013. With opkg , however, there is a fork that is actively being further developed and is used, for example, in the router software OpenWrt .
