The IS series or Stalin tank is a series of heavy Soviet battle tanks named after I ossif S talin ( German : Josef Stalin ) .

history

In response to the German Panzer VI Tiger and possible further developments, the series was during the Second World War from the spring of 1942 as the successor and replacement of the obsolete tanks of the KW series developed on the basis thereof. However, the series is essentially a new design (mainly the tub and tower).

The new vehicles avoided the typical disadvantages of the KW, were about 3.5 t less heavy, had stronger armor and had much larger cannons.

The first production version IS-1 (IS-85) established a new generation of powerful Soviet tanks that would remain in service long after the Second World War. The definitely last version IS-10 (as prototypes IS-8 and IS-9) was renamed T-10 after Stalin's death in 1953 .

The T-10 was the last heavy tank in the Soviet Army. Some versions, although long obsolete due to their age, appeared during maneuvers (IS-2M) in the early 1980s and were not finally decommissioned until 1995. The IS-100, IS-5, IS-6, IS-7, IS-8 and IS-9 remained prototypes.

IS-7
  • IS-8 to IS-10 = T-10
