ISO 527-1

The EN ISO 527-1 (last issue in April 1996, current ISO version February 2012) is a European standard for plastics for the determination of tensile properties, which by a tensile test with a tensile testing machine are determined. EN ISO 527-1 replaces the following earlier DIN standards : DIN 53371, DIN 53455 and DIN 53457.

object

The standard describes the test conditions, the geometry of the test specimen , the recording of measured values, the test speed and the evaluation. The result of the test is a stress-strain diagram from which the following parameters can be determined:

  • (Tensile) modulus (modulus of elasticity in tension)
  • Yield stress
  • Yield strain
  • Breakdown voltage (tensile stress at break)
  • Elongation at break (tensile strain at break)
  • Tensile strength (tensile stress)
  • Poisson (Poisson's ratio)

criticism

The characteristic values of the tensile test according to EN ISO 527-1 only roughly describe the strength properties of plastics. Defined test conditions ensure that the values determined on different samples or materials can be compared, but these do not have to be identical to the loads that occur in practice on a component. In particular, many plastics behave viscoelastically , which makes additional characterization methods necessary.
