I Didn't Know What Time It Was is a composition by Richard Rodgers , with the text by Lorenz Hart from 1939.

You wrote it for the musical Too Many Girls . The song was first sung there by Richard Kollmar and Marcy Westcott . In the 1940 film of the same name, it was sung by Trudy Erwin (who lent her voice to actress Lucille Ball ). It was sung by Frank Sinatra in the 1957 film Pal Joey .

The song's success soon made it a jazz standard too ; it was sung by Ernestine Anderson , Tony Bennett , Betty Carter , Billie Holiday , Shirley Horn and Sarah Vaughan . Instrumental versions of the track have been recorded by Count Basie , Art Blakey , Dave Brubeck , Roland Kirk , Sonny Clark , Chick Corea , Charlie Parker , Oscar Peterson , George Shearing and Lester Young .
