I Want to Be Wanted is the title of a pop song sung by American singer Brenda Lee in 1960 and became a number one hit in the United States.

The song was written by the two Italians Pino Spotti and Alberto Testa under the title Per tutta la vita and published in 1959 in Italy with Sergio Endrigo on a single . As an instrumental piece in the film Sunday… never! to listen. The successful film composer Kim Gannon wrote an English text for the melody for Brenda Lee with the title I Want to Be Wanted . The content revolves around being alone and dreaming of a lover.

After 15-year-old Brenda Lee reached first place in the US charts with I'm Sorry for the first time in July 1960 , she took part in the Bradley Film & Recording Studio in Nashville on August 16, 1960, under the direction of Decca producer Owen Bradley performed the song I Want to Be Wanted . Bradley had worked with Brenda Lee since 1959. The backing band for the production included guitarist Hank Garland , bassist Bob Moore and pianist Floyd Cramer . The Decca record company released the title in late August 1960 on the A side of the single with catalog number 31149 along with the B-side title Just a Little , which had been produced in March 1960.

On September 12, 1960, the title I Want to Be Wanted appeared for the first time in the Hot 100 hit list of the US music magazine Billbord at number 67. A month later, Brenda Lee had reached the top 10 and ousted the Drifters with their on October 24 Song Save the Last Dance for Me from first place. After a week, however, Brenda Lee had to give the lead back to the Drifters. Overall, the title I Want to Be Wanted was able to assert itself in the Hot 100 for 15 weeks. This was also the case with the competition paper Cashbox , but there it was only enough for second place as the best listing. I Want to Be Wanted was released on singles with Brenda Lee in other countries as well . In the international charts, the song made it to number 31 in Great Britain and eleventh place in Canada.

Cover versions

A cover version that was close in time is only known from the British singer Jean Campbell. It appeared on a single on the London label Embassy in October 1960. Sammy Davis Jr. sang a version of I Want to Be Wanted on the 1966 US album A Man Called Adam (Reprise 6180).
