Iamblichos (novelist)
Iamblichos ( Greek Ἰάμβλιχος ; * after 100 in Syria ) was a Greek novelist of the 2nd century.
Iamblichus was born in Syria and raised by a Babylonian slave. In addition to his native Aramaic, he learned Greek so well that he made it a rhetorician . He lived in Armenia during the reign of the Arsakid King Sohaemus .
Only parts of the Babyloniaka ( Βαβυλωνιακά "Babylonian stories"), an extensive novel written after 165 in 35 (or 39) books, including three short stories about the lovers Sinonis and Rhodanes, have survived . Ample use is made of the narrative motifs of the ancient novel: escape from a tyrant, mix-ups, apparent death, etc. Woven references to secret doctrines ( Chaldeans ) and cults ( Aphrodite or Ištar ) seem to contain no authentic information.
