Ibn al-Qiftī

Jamāl ad-Dīn Abū l-Hasan ʿAlī ibn Yūsuf Ibn al-Qiftī ( Arabic جمال الدين أبو الحسن علي بن يوسف ابن القفطي, DMG Ǧamāl ad-Dīn Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Yūsuf Ibn al-Qifṭī ; * 1172 in Koptos ; † 1248 ) was a medieval Arab historian. His best-known writing is called History of Scholars .

Ibn al-Qifti was born in Koptos and later stayed in Cairo , Jerusalem and Aleppo .

The title of 26 of his writings is known, but only two have survived:

  • The History of the Scholars ( Kitab Ikhbar al-'ulama 'bi-akhbar al-hukama' or Ta'rikh al-hukama 'for short ) contains 414 biographies of physicists, philosophers and astronomers.
  • The text Inbah al-ruwat 'ala Anbah al-nuhat contains around 1000 biographies of medieval Arab scholars.
