The Ice Sphinx Hole is a cave in the eastern part of the Weddell Sea off the Princess Martha Coast of Queen Maud Lands East Antarctica .
It was discovered by the crew of the German research icebreaker Polarstern . It has been named since 1997 at the suggestion of the surveyor and glaciologist Heinrich Hinze from the Alfred Wegener Institute after the novel Die Eissphinx by the French author Jules Verne .
