Idmon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Idmon ( Greek  Ἴδμων ), also called Agamestor ( Greek  Ἀγαμήστωρ ), is a seer from Greek mythology . He accompanies the Argonauts on their journey.

Idmon is considered the son of Abas , but Apollonios of Rhodes writes that he is actually the son of the god Apollon and the nymph Cyrene , which explains his ability to divine fortune . He joins the Argonauts reluctantly, foreseeing an unfortunate fate for himself.

When the Argonauts are with the Mariandyn people on the Black Sea , Idmon is attacked by a wild boar. Peleus and Idas try to rescue them, but come too late. They kill the boar, but Idmon dies of his wounds in the arms of his companions. He gets a solemn funeral, which Lycus , king of the Mariandyn people, also takes part.

Apollo is said to have later ordered the Boeoters and Megarians through the oracle of Delphi to build the city of Herakleia Pontike around the olive tree that had grown on Idmon's grave. They obeyed this instruction, but worshiped the seer under the name of Agamestor.
