Idas (son of Aphareus)
Idas ( Greek Ἴδας ) is the son of Aphareus and Arene in Greek mythology . Together with his twin brother Lynkeus , Idas was one of the Argonauts . He also took part in the Kalydonian hunt with him . According to the library of Apollodorus , he was also considered the son of Poseidon .
Idas is said to have had little luck in love: his first wife, the cousin Phoibe , was stolen from him by the Dioscuri Castor, his second wife, Marpessa , wanted to choose Apollo , but the foreseeable fight between the mortal Idas and Apollon was stopped by Zeus who made Marpessa vote. Marpessa chose Idas. With him she had the daughter Cleopatra .
The disputes between Lynkeus and Idas on the one hand with the dioscuri Castor and Polydeukes on the other culminated in the killing of Castor by Idas, whereupon he was struck dead by Zeus by lightning. Lynkeus was killed by Polydeukes.
