Persian Wars
- Athens announces a general amnesty due to the threat of attack by the Persian Empire . Among other things, the Xanthippos and Aristeides , who were banished by the shard court , can return to their hometown.
- The Xerxes Canal on the Chalkidiki peninsula will be completed after three years of construction under the Persian engineer Bubares .
- The Achaemenid Empire begins under Xerxes I a large-scale attack with a land army and a fleet on Greece. For this purpose he has two ship bridges built over the Hellespont at the narrowest point of the Dardanelles near Abydos . When these are destroyed by a storm immediately after completion, Xerxes has the sea whipped and two bridges built again. Their crossing by the Persian army takes seven days.
- around August 11th : " Molon labe " : Greek units can detain the Persians under Abrokomas at Thermopylae for days and inflict heavy losses on them. It was only through the betrayal of Ephialtes of Trachis that the Persian army succeeded in bypassing the pass and surrounding the Greeks. A small Spartan about 1,000-strong unit of King Leonidas I , of Thespiern and Thebern is supported, covering the withdrawal of the remaining troops and in the Battle of Thermopylae completely wiped out.
- August: The battle of Artemision ends in a draw. At the news of the defeat at Thermopylae, the Greeks withdraw, whereupon the way to central Greece is open to the Persians.
- The Persians move south and conquer Delphi . The sanctuary is spared in order not to stir up the resistance of the Greeks. Thebes subsequently openly sided with the Persians.
- Athens , whose population has been evacuated to the nearby island of Salamis , is conquered and its sanctuaries plundered .
- September (presumably 29th ): In the battle of Salamis , the greatest naval battle in ancient history , the Athenian fleet under Themistocles celebrates a decisive victory over the Persians . Great King Xerxes I then pulls his land army back to Thessaly to winter and the fleet to Samos. He himself goes back to Persia . The Persian expansion efforts in Greece have finally failed. Athens becomes the dominant power in Greece because of its fleet.
